SEDUCED BY SYNCOPATION
“Music is not the notes, but the silence between.” Claude Debussy
The rhythmic sound of a metronome might remind some of after school piano lessons on a hard wood piano bench. My childhood memories are of being hypnotized by the elegant simplicity of a wind-up device that could make so many different tempos.
My goal in creating these sculptures was to pair a metronome and the material it’s mounted on so that each piece produced a unique sound. The hollow resonance of a violin body is acoustically distinct from the soulful echo of a brass cymbal. The Ping Pong paddle mimics the sound of casual volley during a game.
